Faculty of History

Since 2011 the faculty is switching to a new two-level system of eduaction.

Training within Bachelor's and Master's programs is offered in the following spheres:

030600.62 History, majors in:

  • History of post-Soviet Russia
  • History of international relations
  • History of international relations with additional qualification of a "translator in the sphere of professional communications (English language)"
  • Historical and cultural tourism

034700.62 Record Management and Archival science, major in:

  • historical and archival science

Upon completion of 4 years of apprenticeship within a Bachelor's program graduates are given a Bachelor's qualification (degree), and upon completion of 2 years of apprenticeship within a Master's program graduates are given a Master's qualification (degree).

All branches of learning are nationally accredited.

Graduates of the faculty upon majoring in 030600.62 History receive fundamental education in the humanities, as well as in national and world history, methodology and historiography, they are given a Bachelor's degree that gives them an opportunity to find a job in the sphere of education (occupation in educational institutions of various levels), mass media, institutions of culture, bodies of the government and management.

Majors in "History of international relations" gain extensive knowledge of history and culture of peoples of the European North, international relations in the European North. Lots of attention is paid to foreign language studies (Finnish, Swedish and English languages on a profound basis, and Norwegian and Danish languages optionally). Since 2010 Master's program in "History of countries of Northern Europe" is offered. Thus, upon obtaining a Bachelor's degree (4 years of apprenticeship) students may continue education within a Master's program (2 years) and obtain a Master's degree in history. Good professional training allows graduates to work successfully in the sphere of education, science, culture, tourism, government and municipal management, business both in Russia, and abroad.

Students majoring in "History" may acquire a specialization in "historical and cultural tourism". Besides basic historical branches of learning, students take courses of management and marketing in culture, technology, economy and legal foundation of business in tourism, features of social and cultural environment in the Republic of Karelia, new information technologies. The system of training includes obligatory work on probation in Kizhi open-air museum and other museum establishments of Russia and Karelia. Graduates of this specialization may find their occupation in teaching, as well as work in travel agencies, museums, establishments of culture, advertising agencies, excursion bureaues.

Within the scope of training majors in History of international relations with additional qualification of a "translator in the sphere of professional communications (English language)" Bachelors of History are trained with assignment of additional qualification of a "translator in the sphere of professional communications (English language)". Apprenticeship makes 4 years. Students of this major take advanced courses of English language, history and culture of the English-speaking countries, courses of regional geography. Good general training in the humanities in combination with skills in foreign languages essentially expand opportunities of employment of graduates as professional translators (simultaneous and technical translation, tour guiding) and in the bodies of government and local management. Their education allows them to self-actualize in the sphere of scientific, research and pedagogical activities.

Students majoring in 034700.62 "Record management and archival science" (chief subject "historical and archival science") receive fundamental historical, record keeping and office-work preparation. The list of historical disciplines, besides basic courses, includes supplementary courses. Great attention is paid to scientific discipline of documentation, documentary support of management, theory and technique of record keeping, etc. Special attention is paid to skills in foreign languages training and high computer technologies. The system of training includes obligatory work on probation in the state and municipal institutions and trade companies. Complex preparation allows graduates to work successfully in bodies of the government and administration, archives, enterprises, institutions and organizations of different patterns of ownership.

During their studies students of the faculty have an opportunity to participate in scientific and research work, to take part in the internal and international research projects supported by the Russian and foreign scientific foundations.
