Faculty of Mining and Geology

The faculty trains experts for the most perspective and claimed trades – mining engineers, geologists and geophysicists.

Work of the mining engineer, geologist and geophysicist demands special knowledge in the sphere of well-drilling, blasting work, rock mechanics and physics, economic appraisal of decisions to make.

Students of all specialities study social, economic and natural-science disciplines. Leading Russian and foreign experts are invited to teach special disciplines.

Chair of mining is in charge of training students majoring in 130400 Mining, Open Cast Mining major (qualification of a specialist) studying full-time or by correspondence. Upon graduation from the university they work as directors of mining enterprises, acquire the right of technical management of mining and explosive works.

During the training period students obtain a knowledge of mining technology, exploitation of modern mining equipment, mine survey and geodetic works, theory and practice of processing of minerals, technology of blasting work and aerology of open cast mines.

In the first two academic years students work on probation (in geology and mining) at the leading mining enterprises of Karelia, in the following years in summer they take practical training at enterprises of the mining complex as workers and substitutes for technical managers.

Main directions of specializations of mining engineers graduating from PetrSU:

• development of high-capacity ore deposits by deep opencast mines;
• extraction and processing of geological material for road-metal production;
• extraction and processing of natural stone.

Chair of geology and geophysics trains students majoring in 020700 «Geology» (with conferring the Bachelor's degree in geology or geophysics). Educational process is carried out in close cooperation with the Institute of Geology of the Karelian Research Centre of the Russian Academy of Science. Experts are trained at information and methodical interaction betwenn faculties of geology and chairs of Russian universities within the programs of classical university education.

Students involved in scientific activity of the Institute of Geology accomplish their research work. Annually students participate in field expeditions of the Institute reporting about results they receive at the annual student conferences held by the Institute of Geology at participation of its leading experts. Besides, the best students read papers at youth conferences in other towns of Russia (St.Petersburg, Perm, Yekaterinburg, Apatity).
