Faculty of Philology

The Faculty of Philology of Petrozavodsk State University is one of the most famous educational and scientific centres in the sphere of philology in the North-West of Russia.

Since 2011 the faculty is switching to a new two-level system of eduaction. It will take students 4 years of apprenticeship to study within the Bachelor's programs in 031300.62 Journalism and 032700.62 Philology. The latter branch has two majors - National Philology (Russian language and literature) and Foreign Philology (classical languages; modern Greek language and literature, English language; English language and literature; German language and literature; Swedish language and literature). Bachelor's degree holders will be able to continue their education within the two-year Master's program.

Teachers of five chairs, including eleven doctors of sciences and professors as well as leading Karelian journalists, accomplish training of highly skilled experts in philology and journalism.

Teachers, post-graduate students and students of the faculty conduct active research work in different areas of modern philology: history of Russian language, Russian folklore, antique and Christian traditions in Russian literature, folklore and fantasy, children's literature, etc. Representative scientific conferences are held at the faculty, collections of proceedings, in particular, special releases with articles of young scientists, post-graduate students and students are published.

The Faculty tends to keep up with the best traditions of university education of our country and, at the same time, to use modern achievements of civilization. For this reason every year the number of foreign languages taught at the faculty grows, and the number of hours assigned for studying it is increased. Recently for philologists, both students, and teachers, computer has become a natural thing, and now the faculty has it own Internet laboratory which, in particular, has its own site www.philolog.ru (in Russian).

Relations of the faculty with foreign universities are dynamic: students from Finland, England, Sweden, USA, Japan, China and other countries come to our university to study Russian language and literature. Our students accomplish language training in foreign educational institutions.

Graduates of the faculty work in higher educational institutions, at schools and technical schools, in mass media, in bodies of the government and in various cultural institutions.
