Foreign Philology: Finnish language and literature, Finnish and Karelian languages and literature, Finnish and Vepsian languages and literature, Finnish and English languages and literature (with awarding a qualification of the Bachelor of Philology). Curriculum within the branch of Foreign Philology provides training of teachers with awarding them additional qualification of "translator in the sphere of professional communications".
Besides general professional disciplines students of the faculty study extensively languages, literature and culture of indigenous ethnoses of Karelia. Teaching is conducted mainly in languages studied; course and degree research projects and conference papers are also performed in national languages.
Teachers, post-graduate students, students conduct active research of grammar, lexicon, history of studied languages, ethnocultural and language contacts, folklore, literature of the Baltic and Finnish peoples, theory and practice of translation.
During their academic period students of the faculty are involved in work of translators at important international events, work on probation as translators in various firms, editorial boards and offices.
Graduates of the faculty work in educational institutions, in cultural and scientific institutes; in publishing houses and national editions of mass-media, as translators in companies, organizations and travel agencies.

The Faculty provides teaching Finnish language in various techniques: entry-level and advanced studying. The 'Finnish in Finnish' technique is mainly used in teaching. A number of courses for senior and graduate students is taught in Finnish.

Karelian language (Karelian proper and Livvic dialects), Vepsian and Finnish languages are taught at the Chair. Most of the teachers of the Chair are native Vepsian or Karelian speakers.
