Chair of neurology

History

The Chair of nervous diseases of Petrozavodsk State University has been founded in 1963 on the basis of the Department of Neurology of the city hospital N1.

Now, after the reduction of the staff, the course of nervous diseases, medical genetics and neurosurgery which staff consists of Ph.D. in Medicine is created. The course performs extensive academic and methodical work, within the past 5 years 7 doctors have been trained in clinical internship, 9 methodical recommendations for doctors and students have been published. 3 candidate dissertations have been defended, 26 scientific works 8 of which are included in international collections have been published.

Personnel of the course of nervous diseases accomplish advisory work in polyclinics and neurologic hospitals of the city. On the basis of Onegomed polyclinic a cerebrovascular cabinet is created, in which electrophysiological patient examinations (electroencephalography, rheoencephalography, echo-encephaloscopy), as well as training of students and doctors is held by the given methods of diagnostics. Training students at the course is accomplished on three clinical bases (neurologic branch of the emergency hospital, neurologic department of railway hospital, neurologic department of children's city hospital N1. This year training of doctors on a cycle of improvement of professional skills of neurologists on pressing questions of diagnostics and treatment of nervous illnesses with delivery of certificate has begun.

The basic scientific problem which has been in the center of attention of the doctors of the chair for many years is cerebrovascular diseases. Almost all Master's theses are devoted to the given theme. Now teamwork with the Chair of faculty surgery on surgical treatment of patients suffering thromboses of extrapyramidal vessels is accomplished. Creation of intercathedral laboratory of "Brain Ischemia" is planned.
