The personnel of the chair includes 10 people among those there are 8 Associate Professors and PhDs, and 2 senior instructors.

The chair carries out scientific research in the following fields:
- Increase of productivity for growing and soil fertility in Karelia
- Dynamics of soil fertility in Karelia - Rational utilisation of organic and mineral fertilizers, lime materials, means of plant defence.
- Studying varieties of potato- and vegetable-growings
- Studying productivity of serials and beans in pure sowings and in herb mixtures
- Studying biological peculiarities of potato rizoktoniose and developing the means of struggling the disease
- Changing naturel environment under the influence of melioration, studying the processec of soil formation
- Influence of agricultural production on environment

The chair holds post-graduate studies in "Meadow cultivation and forage production" and "botany". The 4 post-graduate students and one competitor work on their dissertations.

In 2001the chair will celebrate its 50 th anniversary, and by this time it is planned to hold a scientific conference.

Upon graduation the students recieve the qualification of academic agronomist. In 1999 a new major "Agrobusines" has been established. Introducing this new major had allowed to increasethe competition from 1,6 (in 1997) to 3,4 (in 1999) persons per place. The students of 1st through 4th years carry out scientific research work, undergraduate and postgraduate studenths annualy introduce their results on student conferences. The graduate students defend their thesises based on the results of their researches.

Collaboration with Russian and international enterprises

Annualy 1 to 2 students of the chair work at the farm and educational centres in Finland.

The chair has stable relations with factories. The results of the scientific work are introduced at the agricaltural firm named after Zaitsev and other agricultural enterprizes of the republic.

The students of the 4th year accomplish their practical work at the farms and joint stock enterprises.

The chair cooperates with Karelian state experimental agricultural station (KSEA), Karelian scientific center of Russian Academy of Science (KSC RAS), Institute of qualification increase for agricultural personnel.

Fields of possible cooperation

Chair of agronomy and soil science would welcome:

1. Joint scientific research work according to the orders of the Ministry of Agriculture and agricultural enterprizes

2. instructor and student exchange (education, work on probation, joint research)

3. Holding conferences, seminars, etc.
