The chair has been founded in1992.
The chair carries out scientific research in the following fields:
- Theory of probabilities;
- Mathematical and applies statistics;
- Discrete mathematics;
- Dynamics and kinematics of star systems;
- Additive and probability theory of numbers;
- Novel methods and technologies of teaching at secondary school;
- Integrative model of pedagogical system "School-Higher educational institution".
The chair holds post-graduate studies for the following specialities: 01.01.05 " Theory of probabilities and mathematical statistics" and 05.13.16 " Applying calculating equipment, mathematical modeling and mathematical methods in scientific research". There's also a branch of the chair attached to the Department of mathematics and data analysis of the Karelian Scientific Centre of RAS.
The chair has hosted the following international conferences:

" Probability methods in discrete mathematics" 1992 and 1996;

" Mathematical methods of researching structures and dynamics of gravitating systems" 1993;

" Structure and evolution of star systems" 1995.

The chair has scientific relation with the universities of Russia, Finland, Belgium and Yugoslavia.
The partners of the chair are St.Petersburg state university, Moscow state university, Tver state university, Institute of mathematics named after Steklov, University of Joensuu, University of Turku, University of Antverpen.
