Scientific research accomplished at the chair

The following scientific directions were generated:

  • Introduction and acclimatization of plants, supervised by Professor I.T.Kishchenko, and Associate Prof. A.S.Lantratova
  • Studying of flora and vegetation of natural and anthropogenically affected territories, supervised by G.S.Antipina
  • Plants of parks of Karelia, supervised by Associate Prof. A.S.Lantratova
  • Lichenology researches, supervised by senior lecturer A.V.Sonina, and senior lecturer V.N.Tarasova
  • Flora and vegetation of the seaside strip of reservoirs of the Northwest of Russia, supervised by senior lecturer L.A.Sergienko
  • Ecological and physiological features of various kinds of plants at the edge of the area, supervised by senior lecturer T.J.Diachkova

Basic results of scientific research

Since 1990 research of urban flora of taiga zone on the example of Karelia has been accomplished. Studying flora of vascular plants of some towns is completed, the analysis of urban flora is accomplished. During the report period research of flora of the urbanized territories continued. The flora of Olonets, Velikaya Guba, of some microdistricts of Petrozavodsk was investigated. On materials of the research accomplished the academic manual, articles were published, G.S.Antipina's monography «Urban flora of Karelia» was issued.

Since 1988 studying of introduced kinds of coniferous plants is conducted. On materials of the research accomplished the academic manual and the monography were published. Studying of coniferous plants' introduction in Karelia launched in 1988 proceeded, and on its materials the monography and 31 articles were published in the central magazines.

Research of lichenobiots of middle Karelia were carried out. According to researches the master's thesis «Epiphytic lichen cover of the basic types of pine woods of southern Karelia and its formation» was defended in 2000.

Launched in 1997 research of epilytic lichen cover in territory of Karelia proceed. The master's thesis in dissertational council of Komarov Botanical institute was defended in 2002. Research of laws of formation of epilytic lichen cover in flooded territories proceeds. On results of the research scientific and methodical articles are published.

In 1980 research of flora of a seaside strip of the White sea and creeks, and also studying the supreme water vegetation of Karelia was begun. On materials of the research fulfilled 2 reports were written, theses in reports of the international and All-Russian conferences were published.

Research begun in 1990 regarding the role of daily temperature gradient in plants' ontogenesis proceed. The fundamental role is defined during adaptation of plants to conditions of the North. The monography is prepared.

Postgraduate studies

The Chair is conducting postgraduate studies with specialisation in Botany. Dissertations under E.F.Markovskaya's supervision were defended: N.V.Vasilevskaya's master's theses (1992), M.I.Sysoeva (1992), T.G.Harkina (1998), S.A.Trofimova (1997), V.N.Tarasova (2000), A.V.Sonina (2000), E.A.Platonova (2000), E.V.Dementieva (2000), V.N.Pridacha (2002), N.I.Petrunyak (2003). The following post graduate students work on their thesises now: V.I.Stepanova, N.V.Omelchak, A.V.Eglacheva, T.N.Batyreva, P.N.Lapshin.
Under I.T.Kishchenko's supervision the following post-graduate students accomplish their training: O.V.Sinkevitch, O.V.Chernyaev, O.S.Olkhina.

The Chair possesses the Herbarium of plants of Karelia (PZV) which is the largest in Karelia collection, and the Botanical Garden.

It contains more than 70000 herbarium papers including more than 865 species of higher plants. Nowadays special attention is paid to collection of mosses and lichens. The Botanical Garden is a unique collection of plants growing in Karelia. Botanical collection includes trees and shrubs (ca 700 species from Europe, the North America, the Far East and Asia), decorative and medical plants. Nowadays the department of the aboriginal vegetation is organised on the reserved territory of the Botanical Garden and introduction of rare and disappearing plants of Karelia in culture is organized.

The chair actively works on the establishing of international cooperation. In 1996 the contract on cooperation with Svanhovd international centre in Norway was signed, and members of the chair (E.F.Markovskaya, and G.S.Anitipina) have visited it. Since 1998 contact with Norwegian Institute Nina, Trondheim (I.Bruteig) in the sphere of lichenoindication was established, grants were received, and two projects were completed. Since 2001 correspondence with Swedish University of Uppsala began as a result of which the post-graduate student I.Eglacheva participated in the work of the conference on urban botany at this university (August, 2002). Since 2000 contact was established and the joint grant with Agricultural university of Ass (Norway) was received (Prof. R.Moe).
