Chair of forest engineering has been founded in 1962. The specialists in forest and forest park engineering are trained there.

The branch of the Chair of forest engineering has been created in the Institute of forestry of Karelian scientific centre of RAS in order to bring together the educational and scientific processes, extending the number of disciplines, and improving personnel training in the interest of developing foreatry prouction.

Basic fields of scientific research:

The scientific activity of the chair aims to increase he productivity of Karelian woods.

• studying biodiversify and conservation of genetic resources;

• cleaning hewings in Karelia;

• natural resumption of woods at the places of cutting;

• economics of multi-purpose use of nature;

• bioecological basics for growing seedlings and forest cultivations in the south of Karelia;

• evaluation of phytocenoses' develipment according to the amount of consumed moisture;

• increase of productivity of seedlings through fertilization;

• monitoring forestry pathologies;

• principles of organizing protected natural territories;

• selection of Karelian birch;

• creating wood-seed bases of the basic wood-forming species.

The chair cooperates with Russian (Voronezh state forest engineering academy, Moscow state university of forest, St-Petersburg state forest engineering academy, Archangelsk state technical university) and international institutions (University of Joensuu, Finland, Swedish University of Agriculture, Umea). Проводятся совместные научно-исследовательские работы, семинары, обмен опытом работы преподавателей, стажировки студентов, обмен научной и учебной литературой.
