The personnel of the chair consists of 17 people, incuding 7 Associated professors and Ph.D holders, 2 assistants, 2 engineers and 6 laborants. Lecturers of the Chair teach the following educational courses: General Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, Colloid Chemistry, Physical Chemistry, Analytic Chemistry, Hydrochemistry, Analysis of natural objects, Methodology of chemistry teaching. The teaching personnel of the chair performs lectures for the secondary school teachers and hold annual chemistry contests for secondary school students.
At the Chair there has been organized a scientific seminar on the problems of technogenious pollution in objects of nature (water, soil, food) by toxic trace elements.
Since November 1992 the Chair offers post-graduate studies in physical chemistry.
The Chair researchers have published over 20 articles in various magazines since 1990 and periodical issues of collections of articles Microelements in Biosphere of Karelia;.
Jointly with the RCNIT there have been created databases on microelements contained in natural objects of Karelia.

The Chair has established close cooperation with colleages from Moscow State University and St.-Petersburg State University.
- The Chair implements the following joint projects:
- - Scientific Research Program for Higher educational instititions "Universities of Russia",
- Regional Program "Karelia",
International Program in Enviromental Protection (in cooperation with the University of Mikkely, Finland);
- Research of organic catalysts' functioning mechanisms (in cooperation with Ukrain Academy of Sciences, Donetsk).

- The Chair of General Chemistry invites departments and research organisations to cooperation in the following fields:

- Joint scientific research work (especially in the sphere of ecological chemistry);
