Chair of classic philology which traditionally belongs to the system of European university education was founded in 1995. It is the only one specialized department in universities of Karelia in the Russian North and the third in the Russian Federation after special departments of the universities of Moscow and St.-Petersburg. At Petrozavodsk State University the Chair of classic philology provides classic languages teaching at the Faculties of Philology, Baltic and Finnish Philology and Culture, History, Law, Ecology and Biology, Medicine. Classes are conducted by qualified teachers with proper attention to scientific terminology of the corresponding speciality according to the latest manuals among which there also are textbooks written by the faculty of the Chair.

The Chair offers a specialization in classic languages at the Russian language and literature, classic languages department, and an additional specialization in modern Greek language at the Russian language and literature, modern Greek language department introduced at the Faculty of Philology in 1995.

Teaching modern Greek language and cooperation with educational institutions and philanthropic foundations of Greece have a special place in the Chair's activity.

Scientific activities

Two basic directions should be mentioned concerning scientific activity of the chair:

  • Studying of antique and Christian traditions in Russian literature of the XVIII-XX centuries. Antique and Christian traditions, yet little-studied, are a basis of Russian literature as the literature of European range and explain many specific features of its images and poetics. In this sphere T.G.Malchukova has published the following monographs Philology as Science and Creativity, 1995; Antique and Christian Traditions in A.S.Pushkin's Poetry, 1997; Greek Classics and Our Culture 2005; Antique and Christian Traditions in Representation of a Person and Nature in A.S.Pushkin's Works 2007. Dissertation researches of post-graduate students of the chair, as well as subjects of course and degree works of students majoring in philology are offered the same orientation.
  • Preparation of scientific and academical textbooks and study guides on disciplines taught by terachers of the chair at the university and at school.
