Scientific research

The personnel of the chair accomplishes research in the field of "Social security of population of Karelia under conditions of transition to market economy". The stated above subject is one of the branches of the regional scientific-technical program "Frontier Karelia".

In 1997-2000 the chair has worked on the problem of political and social science analysis in the Republic of Karelia. The problems of political and social situations in Karelia along with identity of its development comparing to Nordic countries, formation of the civil society, and developing political and social-cultural movements are studied.

Courses

The teachers of the chair perform courses for all faculties of the university as well as for the Institute of personnel re-training for those majoring in social administration.

Chair of political and social science performs the following disciplines:

• Social science, economical social science
• Political history of Russia
• History of political ideas
• Introduction to political science
• Number of disciplines in theory, methodology and administration of social work
• Social psychology, supplementary course
• Psychology of business communication, supplementary course

International cooperation

The chair cooperates within two programs - "TEMPUS: improving and modernization of political science training" with the University of Umeå (Sweden) and "Public and state administration" with the University of Vermont.

Within the framework of the TEMPUS program political science courses on "Methods of studying political science" where instructors of the chair participated had been held at the University of Umeå. Studying and discussing of curricula in political science at the University of Umeå had been organized and presented for discussion during presentation of the University of Umeå in Petrozavodsk. The instructors of the chair work on probation on political science in at the University of Umeå.

Program on "Public administration" had been based on the agreement signed in April 1995 by Rector of PetrSU V.Vasiliev and President of the University of Vermont T.Salmon.

The chair also cooperates with Research Centre of Helsinki (STAKES).
