Studying and teaching Russian literature at Petrozavodsk State University has been carried out since its foundation in 1940. Traditions of this work were established by such famous scientists as V.Bazanov (subsequently corresponding member of the Academy of Science of the USSR, director of the Institute of Russian Literature (the Pushkin House), L.Ginzburg, E.Meletinsky (winners of the State premium of the USSR). In the 1950-80s much has been done for development of the chair by Professor M.Gin (the famous expert in the field of research and publication of Nekrasov's works), professor I.Lupanova (specialist in folklore and founder of the school for studying children's literature), professor L.Reznikov (author of publications on Gorky's works), Associate Professor L.Pavlov (the lecturer popular among students of many generations and supervisor of research).

Now at the chair there work 17 teachers, including 6 doctors and 8 Ph.D holders. Most of them are engaged in active scientific research which are annually supported by 8-10 grants of various funds. Average volume of publications a year makes more than 50 quires.

Fields of scientific research:

• Gospel texts in Russian literature of XVII-XX: quotation, reminiscence, motiv, subject, genre;
• Textology and philological databases on the Internet;
• Problems of children's literature;
• The Old Russian booklore.
