The Chair of sociology and social work of Petrozavodsk State University was founded in 2001, and in 2006 it was split into two: the Chair of sociology and the  Chair of social work training students majoring in social work.

The teaching staff of the Chair participates in the Karelian-Finnish project of Development of Professional Resources in the Sphere of Children's Defense in the Republic of Karelia in 2007-2009.
