The chair of "Mechanisation of wood-cultivation" had been founded in 1953 as a part of the Faculty of Technical Engineering of Karelian-Finnish University.

Since 1961 the chair has been located in the main buildingof the university and possesses the study and laboratory of mechanization of wood-cultivation, laboratory of the theory of machines and mechanisms and details of machines.

The head of the chair is Doctor of Technical Engineering, the full member (academician) of the International academy of sciences of ecology and safety of ability to live and the International academy of leaders of business and the administration, the Honored inventor Karelian ASSR, the Honored trainer and the Honored worker of physical training of the Republic of Karelia I.R.Shegelman.

Basic fields of scientific research:

• a substantiation and development of ecologically safe, economically effective and wasteless technological processes of preparation and processing of wood raw materials;

• a substantiation and development of rational engineering and technology for complex use of wood and development of nonconventional resources of wood raw materials;

• perfection of processes of peeling and pulp processing of various kinds of wood raw material;

• a substantiation of effective technology and engineering for цщщв-restorative works;

• development of works on perfection of manufacture and enterprise activity in a wood complex;

• terminological researches in the wood industry and a forestry.

• the hoisting-and-transport equipment in branch;

• details of machines etc.

The chair trains specialists in the following spheres:

• Forest engineeing;

• Machines and equipment of forest complex.

The chair also trains postgraduate and Ph.D. students in "Technology and machines of forest economy and procurement of timber" and "Application of computer facilities, mathematical methods and mathematical modelling in scientific researches".
