The chair of technology of metals and repair has been founded in1979 the head of the chair is Doctor of Technical Engineering, Full Profesor, Academician of RANS, the Honored Scientist of the Republic of Karelia A.V.Pitukhin.

The chair has 9 educational laboratories and study rooms. lathe-screw-cutting, drilling, and also milling and grinding machine tools are installed in the laboratory of machine tools. The laboratory of welding is equipped with the equipment for manual arc, gas, dot and argon-arc weldings. The laboratory of metallurgical science has the equipment for studying microstructure of materials, laboratory of repair has stands for checking and adjustment of the basic units of automobiles and tractors. Study room CAD is equipped with modern computers and printers, plotter, access to Internet.

Basic fields of scientific research:

• ways of increase of reliability of machines and the equipment of a wood complex at designing, manufacturing, operation and repair (development of modern methods of calculating elements of machines designs; development of progressive methods of a choice of materials, manufacturing and heat treatment of details of machines; methods of an estimation of operational reliability лесозаготовительных machines; development of modern effective methods of the organization of repair, service, providing timber-procurement machines with spare parts);

• development of progressive technologies, machines and the equipment for forestry works;

• development of progressive methods of energy accumulation;

• development of progressive methods of wood drying.

The courses on "Bases of scientific researches" and "Reliability of machines and the equipment" have the important place in the block of special disciplines for training the mechanical engineer. Students of a speciality "Forest Engineering business " take courses on "Systems of automation of engineering work", "Designing of products from wood" and "Technology of products from wood". The special disciplines of the faculty include: "Mathematical methods and models in calculations on the computer" and "Computer graphics". They allow students of the Faculty of Forest Engineering to get essential improve of the level of mathematical preparation and to receive additional skills of a computer as the tool of the engineer.

As disciplines of specialization "Paper-manufacturing mechanical engineering" students majoring in mechanics take the following courses:

• " Mathematical modelling and CAD",

• " Technology of paper-manufacturing mechanical engineering ",

• " Operation, repair and installation of equipment for pulp and paper manufactures",

• " Special steels and alloys ",

• " High technologies in mechanical engineering ".

A number of courses on this specialization is taught by experts of joint-stock company "Petrozavodskmash" at the enterprise. At the choice of students the course "Marketing of spare parts" is read etc.

Annually the chair has 20 to 30 graduate students. The faculty holds postgraduate and doctoral studies on a speciality Technology and machines of a forestry and timber cuttings and Application of computer facilities, mathematical methods and mathematical modelling in scientific researches. There works a scientific seminar where results of scientific works are considered, materials of dissertations are reported, some scientific problems are discussed.

Cooperation

The faculty supports close international cooperation with faculties of forestry of University of Joensuu (Finland), University of Helsinki, the Swedish university of agricultural sciences. On behalf of the Faculty of Forest Engineering PetrSU is a member of the European wood institute. The facultu has developed good relations with the University of Oulu (Finland), Polytechnical institute of Kaiani, Higher professional school of Kaiani, North-Karelian Higher professional school of Joensuu, the South-Karelian polytechnical institute in Imatra and Lapeenranta, Institute of the hunting and fish economy (Finland). The faculty cooperates with the St.-Petersburg timber academy, the St.-Petersburg state technical university, the Voronezh state timber academy, Murmansk state technical university, the Vologda polytechnical institute etc.
