General information

Due to active development of the industry of tourism in the RK (in 2002) the interfaculty Chair of tourism was created in order to train specialists in "Social and Cultural Service and Tourism" on the following majors:

• since 2002 - "Ecological Tourism"
• since 2004 - "Hotel Service"
• since 2005 - "Restaurant Service"
• since 2005 - "Tourism"

Apprenticeship:
internal instruction - 5 years
instruction by correspondence - 6 years, 4 years (abbreviated)

Projects

Within the framework of the Faculty and curriculum development in tourism and hospitality management at Petrozavodsk State University project the Chair cooperates with the California Polytechnics. Teachers of the Chair went to California in 2004, and from April, 2005 till November, 2005 teachers of the California Polytechnics read lectures to students of the Chair of Tourism in English.
The Chair of Tourism also cooperates with Kajani Polytechnics (Finland) in the field of student exchange, silves tasks related to organization of practical work at enterprises of tourist industry in Finland.

Students' life

Students of the Chair are engaged in scientific activity, take active part in organization and carrying out of tourist exhibitions "Karelia Touristskaya", and "Work Shop" business - projects

Partners of the Chair of Tourism are:

• California Polytechnics Pomona which teachers read lectures on tourism and hospitality in English.
• Kajani Polytechnics (Finland) with which exchange of students is supported, international student conferences and presentations are held.
• Euroforum exhibition agency
• Vodlozersky national park

Academic and practical training:

Freshmen work on probation in Shotozero sports camp

Sophomores work on probation at:

• Tour agencies of the Republic of Karelia
• Hotels and restaurants
• National parks

Students have an opportunity to work on probation abroad (in the USA, Finland, Turkey, Balearic Islands).
For many students such practice became the first step of their career, as they work in tour agencies combining study with work.
Some students have already started their own business.
