The chair of zootechnics is the only one in the European North of Russia (Republic of Karelia, Republic of Komi, Murmansk and Archangelsk regions) training specialists in animal husbandry. Since its foundation in 1953 the chair has trained and turned out 1178 specialists in animal science and zoological engineers.
There are 1 Full Professor, 15 Associate Professors and PhDs, 2 instructors, and 6 methodologists at the chair. 89% of lecturers have academic degree.
The chair accomplishes scientific research and holds postgraduate studies well. The students major in selections of animals, fish breeding, economy of animal husbandry, fur farming, poultry farming, horse breeding, agricultural
ecology.
- Courses performed at the chair:
-

About 10% of students annually work on probation in Finland, Sweden, Norway and other countries. All teachers of the chair have had scientific probation in Finland, some also worked in the USA, Germany, Norway and Sweden.
| Scientific research: |
 |
The main feature of scientific development of the faculty is a combination of fundamental and applied research. Under the leadership of the professor E.P.Karmanova the
scientific school on genetics and selection of agricultural animals has been created.
Scientific trends: Genetic bases of increase of efficiency, fertility and resistance to illnesses of agricultural animals.
- Basic themes of research:
-
- Methods of perfection of Ayrshire cattle at thoroughbred breeding and crossing with other breeds;
- Paratypical, physiological and hereditary factors of fertility increase of cattle;
- Development of methods of selection of cattle on increase resistance to a mastitis;
- Organization of breeding work with Ayrshire breed of cattle;
- Analysis and ways of improvement of a forage reserve and full value of feeding agricultural animals in Karelia.
Main scientific results of the school
- the system of scientific and methodological maintenance of selection of Ayrshire breed of cattle and creation of highly productive herds in the European North Russia is developed;
- under the scientific and methodical management of the faculty the best population of Ayrshire breed of cattle in Russia is bred;
- new concepts of desirable type of Ayrshire cattle, use interior and exterior estimations of animals in the theory and practice of a breeding are formulated;
- theoretical and methodological bases of selection on increase genetic resistance of large horned livestock to a mastitis are developed;
- the concept and methodology of selection of dairy cattle according to technological attributes is proved;
- factors are investigated and ways of increase of fertility of dairy cattle are revealed;
- the new way of diagnostics of cows' mastitis (the copyright certificate 1158929) and a patentable method of transformation of estimation of the qualitative test for a mastitis in a quantitative estimation is developed on the basis of curtailing logarithms with shift.
The unique for the universities of Russia problem laboratory of genetics of resistance to mastitis works actively since 1991. For over 20 years the students' scientific group "For healthy herd" diagnoses mastitis at 1700 cows in two herds 6 times a year. Scientific conference of students, post-graduate students and teachers of faculty is held annually, seminars are organized on a regular basis.
- The chair is able to train Ph.D. holders in the following fields:
- - Breeding, selection and reproduction of dairy cattle;
- increase genetic resistance of animals to illnesses (mastitis, leucosis); - fish breeding;
- fur farming.
