Content description:
1. Neurophysiological aspect. The motor system has a dual role in homeostatic organisms, including humans: – motion and thermoregulation. Muscles produce heat during voluntary contraction and cold shivering (tremor), and also help to build a posture, which minimizes heat losses. In turn, temperature affects muscle contraction both during short-term and long-term action (adaptation to cold).
2. Work in the Cold. Cold shivering may affect the efficiency of fine movement, while decrease of muscle temperature lowers gross muscular activities. Muscular fatigue in the cold. Hand dexterity in the cold.
3. Social aspect. “Motion in the Cold” has social aspects, including increased risk of falls and traumas in the winter time on slippery surfaces. Older people with weak motor system in the cold. Winter sports and leisure time. Vacation in the Southern countries (adaptation aspects).

1) Acute pancreatitis

Course Title: Acute pancreatitis.
Course Discription:
The course aims at familiarizing the student with the problems of diagnosis and principles of treatment of the acute pancreatitis. By direct involvement in the clinical practice, the 4th year student will be exposed to surgical patients with acute pancreatitis at all stages of presentation, during treatment and operation, and postoperative period. . A series of didactic lectures regarding basic principles in diagnoses. Thorough history evaluation, reasons of the pancreatitis. The situation in Karelia and laboratory results will be incorporated into a general discussion for particular patients with destructive forms of pancreatitis. The student will work as a preceptor with one of the clinical Faculty surgeon listed. Clinical is available in the hospitals: The hospital of Emergency Help, Republic Hospital, Railway Hospital.
Prerequisite: Completion of Year IV
Duration: Two (2) weeks or Four (4) weeks
