The Canadian Studies Centre was established on September 12, 2002 with the support of the Consulate General of Canada in Saint-Petersburg. The Consul General of Canada in Saint-Petersburg Anna Biolik took part in the opening ceremony of the Centre on the12th of September.
At the meeting with PetrSU rector V.N.Vasiliev Mrs. Biolik noticed that Petrozavodsk State University is close to the European educational standards. She promised to contribute to the broadening of the projects that are realized by the tutors and students of the university. According to the Consul General there has already been created a special Fund to provide support to such projects in Canada.
The fundamental aim of the Centre is:
development of cooperation between Petrozavodsk State University on the one hand and the research and educational innovation and social organizations of Canada on the other hand.
The fundamental objectives of the Centre:

working out and implementation of Canada studies programs for the institutions of higher education in the Republic of Karelia in particular and the North region of Russia in general;

assistance in developing of research programs and projects aimed at studying of Canada by under- and post-graduate students, young scientists and teaching staff of the institutions of higher education in the North economic region of Russia;

assistance in establishing the partner relations and the development of cooperation between organizations of Canada and European North;

creation of the database which includes information on the educational, research and cultural institutions and social organizations of Canada;

working out the projects and programs in the framework of Canadian-Russian cooperation;

holding of conferences and seminars;

creation and organization of work in research groups to study history, culture, economics and politics of Canada;

project activity information and consulting services rendered to natural and legal persons;

publication preparation;

assistance in students and teachers exchange programs realization;

creation and support of the Centre web-site.
During the work visits to Canada in 2005 and 2006 PetrSU rector V.N.Vasiliev completed cooperation and participation agreements with Yukon College, Laval and York Universities. The aim of these agreements is to promote international cooperation and to support the realization of mutual interests in the spheres of higher education and research work.
