The student tourist club "Sampo" ("the mill of happiness") was founded in 1964, and has been actively working ever since. It arranges water tourism on canoes and catamarans, hiking, ski and bicycle tourism in Karelia and all over Russia. Among the participants there are children, school-children, students, university instructors and assistants, club veterans and members of their families.

The club offers light 1-3-days and heavy 7-25-days long trips. More than 150 tourist groups (8-16 people in each) have been to the lake Baikal area. 10 groups have been to Kamchatka (10000 km from Petrozavodsk). Some groups have traveled to Yakutia, Altai, Urals, Caucuses, Pamire, Carpathians, Putorans.

The following ski tourist trips have been undertaken: Narian-Mar -- Archangelsk -- Petrozavodsk (2000 km), Petrozavodsk -- Murmansk, Petrozavodsk -- Archangelsk -- Syktyvkar.

The club is headed by the masters of sport tourism Yuri Lanyov and Tatyana Lanyova. They have organized and participated in 6 Russian-Finnish ski tourist trips, the first of which (from Petrozavodsk through Sortavala -- Joensuu -- Varkaus to Nisalmi, 400 km across Karelia and 400 km across Finland, 16 days) took place in 1990. Also several Russian-Finnish water, ski, and bicycle trips on Russian and Finnish territory have been organized. Several international seminars on tourism development have been held.

The club has good guides and has worked out interesting routes for different kinds of tourist trips.

The club is interested in receiving information on the work of various tourist groups, such as skiers, bicyclists, hikers and water tourists of the European North of Russia.
