
Regional Center for New Information Technologies of the North region (RCNIT) founded in 1991 on the basis of the Information Center of Petrozavodsk State University (PetrSU) works in the field of creation, introduction and use of information technologies in education, scientific research, solution of social and economic tasks of the region. RCNIT of PetrSU is one of the leading university centers of Russia. Among applied projects of the RCNIT of PetrSU there are geographic information systems, Web-applications and Internet portals, systems of e-learning, integrated information-and-analytical university control system, automation systems, decision support systems, etc. Since 1995 RCNIT coordinates development of the information space of the republic, develops and supports Internet resources of the regional level, including Karelia regional server (1995), the Republic of Karelia State Government Bodies' official web portal The Official Karelia (1998), the Komart corporate site (2000), educational (2006) and youth portals of the Republic of Karelia (2008), Portal of the Government Services of the RK (2008), etc.
RCNIT is the principal executor of the informatization program of the Republic of Karelia, projects concerning creation of the e-Government of Karelia and uniform geographic information system of the republic.
In recent years RCNIT has implemented three projects in Karelia supported by the European Union in the field of using ICT for business: e-Karelia in 2004-2006, Development of the e-Government Interactive Services for Business in the Northwest of Russia in 2005-2007, Electronic Skills for Russian Small and Medium Enterprises (e-SkillsII) in 2006-2007.
Projects of RCNIT in the field of information technologies are well known in the republic and beyond, they have won awards of many Russian and international exhibitions and conferences, including Grand Prix in 2007, 2008, 2009 at the international congress-exhibition Global Education.
